What is CBD, and How Does It Work?

When patients take CBD, it interacts with their body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps control pain, mood, inflammation, sleep, appetite, and more. It can then change how the endocannabinoid system works by binding with some receptors or impacting molecule levels.

The Problem with CBD

Unfortunately, the body doesn’t absorb CBD easily.

For example, if a patient swallows 100 mg of CBD in a gummy or a capsule, only 5 mg of CBD will actually reach their bloodstream. Not very effective.

That’s why CBD is usually mixed with oil, like coconut, grape seed, or hemp oil, and taken sublingually. This way, patients can absorb more CBD. It can improve the absorption rate from about 5% to between 13 and 19%.

But they must hold the CBD oil under their tongue as long as they can, at least for 60 seconds. The longer they hold it, the more CBD they absorb, and the better it works.
